Mission Estancia’s Enrichment Program currently consists of Music, Digital Literacy, Science Enrichment, Physical Education, Yoga, and Library. These programs make up the Rotation Wheel. Students engage in the Rotation Wheel once each week to take advantage of the educational opportunities provided in these classrooms. One of the main fundraising goals of the PTA/EEF at ME is to raise funds to pay for the Enrichment teachers’ salaries.
What is the EEF?
EEF stands for Encinitas Educational Foundation at Mission Estancia. The foundation is a chapter of the greater Encinitas Educational Foundation that was created to ensure our kids receive the best possible education by adding to the educational opportunities the students are receiving in the standard classroom curriculum. The Enrichment teachers are full-time fully credentialed teachers who specialize in the subject they teach.
How does Mission Estancia determine its Enrichment Program plans?
Each year, the Mission Estancia School Site Council develops a plan and budget to determine the needs of the ME Enrichment Program. The School Site Council is comprised of administrators, teachers, and parents. Their focus is to provide our children with the best education possible. Every child benefits from our funded programs.
Mission Estancia Parents, please meet our Enrichment Teachers for the 2018/2019 school year!
Kate Miles will be teaching music…
Hello Mission Estancia families, my name is Kate Miles and I am the new music teacher. I am so excited to be here with all of your children and I look forward to their successes over the coming academic year.
To introduce myself, I live in Encinitas with my husband Richard and my two girls Jessica and Ellie who are 11 and 8. We moved here from Birmingham, England in April 2017 for my husband’s work and could not have ended up in a better place. Before our move I was an Elementary teacher in Birmingham. I am also a qualified dance teacher and, of course, a music enthusiast. I have been singing, playing the piano and flute since a young age, spending over 10 years in a local church choir. I also sang throughout my high school years in various choirs and continued as an adult whenever time permitted. In my spare time I help to coach my daughter’s cheer team and as a family we have embraced the outdoor California life of hiking and going to the beach with our dog Charlie. My favorite app to use with the kids in music is Garageband. I love the fact that all children can be composers.
I love to teach kids how to play instruments, including voice and to see the progress they make and the enjoyment they get from learning a new skill. This year I want the children to learn new instruments and be confident to perform in front of an audience. My driving motivation is to be able to give kids opportunities that they might miss if they are not taught music. Music can appeal to everyone on some level. It helps with stress and for many kids gives them something to invest their time and efforts into. This year, I will be teaching the children about different periods of music in history. We will be learning to play different instruments, sing a variety of songs and perform these to an audience. I will teach them how to read music and understand the terminology used.
Tracy Borin will be teaching Digital Literacy…
Hello parents. My name is Tracy Borin and I am the new Digital Literacy teacher. I have been teaching for 8 years in Solana Beach, including 3 years of Science and 5 years of Technology. I graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Ergonomics, went to San Diego State University for my Master’s Degree, and got my Teaching Credential from Cal State Los Angeles. I live in Carmel Valley and have two children; a son, Spencer, who is in 7th grade, and a daughter, Taylor, who just graduated from Sonoma State and is going to be an Occupational Therapist. I have two golden retrievers, one of which is a 5 month old puppy that keeps me very busy! I love running and walking on the beach, reading and spending time with my family. One of my favorite apps is Book Creator, because you can use it so many different ways and it allows you to draw, take photos and be creative with your text!
One of my favorite concepts to teach is Coding, because it is like solving a puzzle. Students realize how fun and easy it is, and they really enjoy it. If I could meet any famous person related to Technology I would be Bill Gates. My goal for the ME students this year is to improve our digital literacy skills, to have fun learning about Technology, and to try out some new apps and programs. I would love to expand the ME News program and also add a digital portfolio to share student’s work. I love teaching Technology because the students are so creative and learn so quickly. It is amazing to me how the students can express themselves through a project. Some students truly excel when using technology, and I enjoy that it is an ever-changing field. It keeps us all focused on being life-long learners! This year I plan to include a variety of apps and programs on both the desktop and iPads, to do the Hour of Code school-wide in December, and we will try app smashing, multi-media projects and presentations. I will also tie into the classroom curriculum when appropriate so that some projects will overlap and emphasize what students are learning in the classroom.
Heather Creighton is our returning Science Enrichment Teacher…
Hello ME Parents, I am excited to be back another year to teach Science Enrichment!
I graduated from UCLA with a Life Science & Biology Credential and Masters in Education. I have experience teaching K-6th Science, as well as Jr. High & High School. My husband Jeff, is an entrepreneur, and I have 3 children who are now 19, 22 & 25, and have all attended Encinitas schools. My favorite science app is NightSky, which allows you to identify objects in the night sky by simply aiming your device skyward.
I can’t really say I have a favorite lesson to teach because I think all science is fun, but a stand-out is culturing Petri dishes with the 6th Graders. If I could meet a famous scientist, it would be Leonardo DaVinci, who had both an interest in Science & Art, which I enjoy doing in my free time. My goal this year is to get ME students curious & excited about science & to foster their desire to learn more about the world around them. I have always been interested in science because there is always something new– a new question to answer or a new discovery. My lessons are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)- an inquiry based, more student-driven approach, integrating science with other disciplines & the Engineering Design Process (EDP). Life, Earth & Physical Science concepts with be taught through hands-on investigations, demonstrations & activities. These include (varies by grade):
-Habitat & Adaptation
-Organisms- Structure & Function
-Plant & Animal Life Cycles
-Variation of Traits (Biodiversity)
-Food Webs & Ecosystems
-Natural Resources & Conservation
-Force & Motion
-Energy, Light & Sound (Waves)
-Physical & Chemical Properties/Change
-Earth & Space
-Weather & Climate
The ME Giving Garden & hydroponics greenhouse will be an important & integral part of science rotation, as well as guest speakers for grades 4-6.
Breana Acampora will be teaching yoga and PE this year at Mission Estancia..
Hi, my name is Breana and I’m really excited about joining the ME team as the Health and Wellness teacher. I was a preschool teacher for 6 years and enjoy working with children and families. I’ve lived in San Diego my entire life and love the coastal life. I enjoy traveling and practicing yoga. My favorite app related to yoga and mindfulness is Calm.
My favorite concepts to teach in yoga are awareness of breath and body coordination, balance, and movements. In PE, I love to teach new skills and sportsmanship. If I could meet any famous person related to yoga Chelsey Korus, a well-known yoga teacher. My goal is for students to enjoy their experience in Yoga and PE classes. I hope students can learn to incorporate the world readiness traits into their daily lives. I want students to have a positive outlook about health and wellness and look forward to these classes at school.
My motivation and inspiration for teaching yoga and PE is that I love to contribute to the health and wellness of the students and teach them skills they can use in other areas of their lives. In yoga, I hope to create a calm space for students to learn about awareness, concentration, and breathing exercises that will positively impact their academic performance. I think PE is also important for students to explore and learn about different sports and physical activities to bring balance to their educational experience.
The students will be learning about movement in many different forms throughout various PE and Yoga activities. We will be discussing and learning about the World Readiness Traits and how to apply them in our daily lives.
